I’ve been chatting in past weeks with my husband about what I want to explore next for Feed Me I’m Hungry. I knew I wanted to work on pasta making. I’ve had the idea on the brain for quite some time. Perfectly formed, fresh, homemade noodles…When the idea first occurred to me I promptly ordered 10 pounds of semolina flour. But the flour currently resides in my chest freezer (The interwebs tell me I can freeze semolina to no ill effect for a while… sure hope so!) as I’ve only ever attempted one batch of noodles. However, I received a pasta cutting attachment for my Kitchen Aid this past Christmas and it seemed like a sign I should pick back up my pasta quest. But when thinking out loud to my husband I also realized I wanted to do a series of posts that fit together somehow. Themed, if you will. I really enjoyed working on my 6 Ingredient Solution Test Recipes series of posts, and really wanted to work on some sort of series again.
My husband brilliantly suggested a European food tour. (European because I am most fascinated with food in this area.) Maybe work on a few dishes at a time from each country and do a series of posts. I thought it was a great idea, but just wasn’t sure. But I mulled it over that evening and by the next day I had decided I loved the idea. I’ve always wanted to REALLY travel. And I’ve always said that I want to travel by eating. While there are monuments and landmarks around the world I do want to see, I most want to travel with my stomach. Someday when I do get to travel I plan to taste my way through each country.
But for now, I’ve decided to start my travels from my kitchen. It occurred to me that in light of my pasta making interest Italy would be a perfect place to start. So I present to you the Feed Me I’m Hungry World Food Tour 2014. Up first: Italy!
Now the disclaimers. :)
- I’m quite sure I will not make it everywhere around the world. The world is a large place after all. I’m picking and choosing based on what catches my fancy at the time, please excuse any omissions. No insult intended. If you have a particular place you’d like me to feature, leave me a comment, drop me a line. I will consider all input!
- I may write and cook my way through the world for a year, two years, or maybe just a month (A which point I should probably rename this set of posts to something other then World Tour). My point being that I don’t have a pre-planned time frame for this project, nor any idea on how many countries I want to explore. Please bear with me if I get on a kick with something else and move on.
- Now I’m not Italian, French, Greek, or many other things, and have not yet been to many, many, different countries. So I will state upfront that some of the recipes I share with you will not be authentic. Please think of what I share with you as inspired by the area I’m studying. My recipes will be Italian inspired, or French, or Greek, or whatever. I’m American with my own interestingly mixed up background. And surely my own background, location, and availability of ingredients will color the recipes I present to you. I’ll definitely give you a heads up if I’m attempting an authentic recipe or sharing a hybrid of my own. And if you know food from the area I’m working on, please, please share your wisdom! When I do present an authentic recipe I really want to get it right.
I do want to add: despite my lack of citizenship in many awesome countries I do promise to bring you the best information and food I can by consulting the experts, researching lots, trying special unique techniques to the best of my ability, and really trying to understand an area’s food. I will practice, practice, practice in the kitchen and share my best. Again if you are from one of these countries I am exploring or have visited, or whatever, please comment and share your wisdom!
That all being said Welcome to Italy. My 1st post will be on February 3rd.
